Contract Roles

1. SQL Wizard (contractor)

We need an SQL database administrator who can:

  • Optimize database performance by tweaking indexes and database configuration.
  • Use SQL Profiler to find inefficient queries and stored procedures.
  • Rewrite stored procedures using temporary tables to increase efficiency.
  • Drive, has a vehicle and is willing to travel throughout Metro Vancouver.

2. Backups Wizard (contractor)

We need people to run mini-projects at client sites to:

  • Identify the current backup sets, their dependencies and business constraints (times when backups cannot run).
  • Optimize backups to run in the shortest amount of time possible while maintaining a robust backup set that is easy to retrieve from.
  • Document and map all aspects of the backup (time schedule, all constraints, dependencies, etc).
  • Test that a disaster recovery is possible from backups.
  • Must have a vehicle and be willing to travel throughout Metro Vancouver.

3. Network Consolidation Wizard (contractor)

You are dropped into a server room.  It is cramped, dusty, and filled with antiquated servers and network equipment, a mess of cables, a pile of unused hardware, old manuals and countless widgets of unknown design.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take inventory of production servers (their roles, specifications, etc.) and come up with a plan of what can be decommissioned, moved to an under-utilized server, or to determine which servers are excellent candidates to be moved over to a brand-new virtualized server.

  • Added bonus if you have planning, budgeting and project management skills to implement the project.
  • Must have a vehicle and be willing to travel throughout Metro Vancouver.

4. Network Traffic Wizard(contractor)

You are a network detective:

  • The term “sniffing packets” doesn’t bring to mind a tea store.
  • “My application runs slow…” You can determine if it’s the network, the internet connection or the SQL server that’s the root of the problem.
  • “We have a fibre connection here, why is the network so slow?” You have the ability to find out who’s using up all the traffic by user or by type (peer-to-peer downloads, streaming video/audio, personal device usage, etc.) or if hardware is the cause.
  • “That dedicated fibre connection we have to our satellite office three blocks away seems really slow.” You can confirm whether or not it is, and what’s causing the slowdown.
  • “Now that we know why our network is slow, what can we do about it?” You can configure bandwidth allocation on a router (by user, blocking applications, etc.).
  • Sonicwall experience is an asset.
  • Must have a vehicle and be willing to travel throughout Metro Vancouver.

5. Microsoft Exchange Wizard (contractor)

You can walk onto an unfamiliar site and investigate the state of the exchange server, looking at capacity, oversized archives, redundancy, backups and coming up with a plan for how to stabilize and optimize the configuration.

You can also work with users to optimize their Outlook experience through folder management.
